Newness of life is becoming a new creation or a new creature in Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says that: 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

This scripture is basically saying that a Christian should not behave themselves the same way that was done in their life before Christ. There should be a newness of spirit.

Romans 7:6: But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

We are challenged in the Word of God to put on a whole new garment or wardrobe. This wardrobe should match the new life that is in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Col. 3:12–17 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

The Holy Spirit will empower us as believers to live the life that is pleasing to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit of God indwells everyone that has accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. When the Holy Spirit resides, He will provide encouragement, and strengthen the believer to live a proper lifestyle unto the Lord.

The Bible says: You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. (Romans 8:9)

The Word of God in 2 Peter 1:3-8 shows us spiritual growth.

2 Peter 1:3-8 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So from these scriptures we can see that spiritual growth comes from :

an increase in understanding and knowledge of the Word of God

seeking to stop sinning

increase in Christian character

increase in faith in God through the filling up of the Word of God

Spiritual growth will happen when we have a true relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word. Through the Power and Ministry of the Holy Spirit we will increase our relationship with Jesus and experience the growth in the Spirit that we deserve. We should seek the Lord for sound Biblical teaching of an experienced Bible teacher. We should not place ourselves under just anyone. We should not even look at the crowd of people that are gathered inside of a physical church. These are not the prerequisites that will cause us to be in the vein of the truth.

Spiritual growth occurs in levels throughout the Christian’s life until they see Jesus face to face. There is a lot of training, rebuking, correction and teaching that comes along with the learning and application of the Word of God. This is why there are no Lone Rangers in the Body of Christ. The Word of God must be discerned properly so that we do not get our own “ideas” of what the Bible is truly saying.

2 Timothy 3:16-17: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

The Christian must also learn how to get and keep the flesh under the subjection of the spirit of man through the power of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. In turn, the fruit of the Spirit will come forth and glorify the Lord in the life of the believer.

Galatians 5:19-23: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

<itunes:summary>The Word of God in 2 Peter 1:3-8 shows us spiritual growth.

When Jesus walked the earth He did proclaim that He was God. The Bible even shows that Jesus Christ is God. The Jews even tried to stone Jesus for His proclamation of being God. The Jews knew that Jesus was claiming deity. The reader should be drawn to the fact that Jesus did not deny this claim stating that “I and the Father are One” (John 10:30). Jesus was declaring the He and the Father God were one in nature. Jesus also Said in John 8:58:” I tell you the truth, before Abraham was, I am”. When Jesus made this claim the Jews response was to begin to throw stones at Jesus even for the purpose of killing Him for blasphemy according to the Mosaic Law.

John also confirms the fact of Jesus’ deity. John documents that the Word was God and that the Word became flesh. (John 1:1, 14). These words are clear that Jesus Christ came to this earth as God in the flesh. Acts 20:28: also shows that Jesus is God saying: “Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own Blood. We already know whose Blood was shed for the purpose of the Church. Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is God in the flesh. Jesus is not just the son of God. Jesus Christ is God.

We see in the Bible also that even doubting Thomas made the declaration the Jesus Christ was “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). Notice when you read these versus that Jesus did not correct Thomas. Titus tells us to stand and watch for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Father speaks of Jesus as being “O God” in Hebrews 1:8: Your throne O God will last forever and righteousness will be the scepter of your Kingdom.

The angel told the apostle John to worship God in Revelation 19:10. Jesus receives worship in the Gospels see: Matt 2:11, 14:33, 28:9, 17, Luke 24:52 and John 9:38). Jesus did not rebuke anyone for worshipping Him. The point being here is that if Jesus was not God He would not have received the worship but would have rebuked the people as the angels in the Bible did when men worshipped them.

The reader must know that if Jesus was not God then He cold not have died for our sins because His death would not have been sufficient to pay the penalty for the sins of the world 1 John 2:2. Another human being could not have paid the price for the sins of humanity. Only God could qualify as the spotless Lamb of God.

Jesus taught us a prayer in Matthew 6:12.

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors”.

We as believers should not ask forgiveness for our own shortcomings and then hold unforgiveness to others. This would be considered hypocritical. The Lord has forgiven us as Christians and paved the ways for us to walk in forgiveness. So as we are forgiven we should forgive others. This one fact is a huge key to receiving deliverance. Unforgiveness or harboring bitterness in your heart will block a deliverance session.

Eph 4:32: And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Walking in unforgiveness is sin and should be confessed as such. The Father will forgive you in the Name of Jesus. Building up unforgiveness in your heart even against a family member will hinder your relationship with the person and with the Lord. We must deal with these issues straightaway so that we can walk in the grace of God and be reconciled with whoever we have held unforgiveness or bitterness. We can forgive when the fault was contributed to us, however, when the fault is contributed to someone else this is the test. Can we let go of our self-will and let the Lord work in our hearts to soften our hearts and just forgive? Forgiveness is not an option, forgiveness is a requirement in the Word of God and your deliverance and relationship with the Lord will not be complete until we let go and let God.

Examples of unforgiveness would be: When children disappoint their parents or vice-versa, people hurting their Pastors, or Pastors hurting their people. We all have had teachers who have hurt us, even unknowingly hurt us. Sometimes we may hurt a family member and not even know that we have done anything and they may hurt us without their knowledge. Whether or not a person deserves forgiveness is not the issue, we should forgive not because we feel like it, but because the Word tells us to do so. When we are obedient to the Word of God then our walk will be sweeter and our load will be lighter.

1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, H is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us for all unrighteousness.

The gift of forgiveness is something that no one can earn. The price has been paid. This is a free gift called grace that was purchased with the precious Blood of Jesus. So just forgive, yourself, any one that has hurt you knowingly or unknowingly. And then release them. We should not pray that God will “deal with them” or “punish them”, we should just forgive them and if you have your prayer language (pray in tongues) just pray in the spirit for them and God will bless you and grow you in the Spirit.

Forgiveness Prayer:

Father, I confess that in the past I have held unforgiveness, sometimes bitterness in my heart against certain people who have hurt or disappointed me. I now recognize this as a sin and confess it as sin, for You have said in your Word that if we confess our sin, You are faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness.

I do now forgive the following people whom I can remember, who have hurt or disappointed me, (take time now and let the Holy Spirit recall any names of people that now or in the past/present and release them in the name of Jesus) I am asking the Holy Spirit to help me break any ground of unforgiveness right now in the name of Jesus. I command that spirit to loose me now in the name of Jesus. I now freely forgive all these people and ask You Lord to forgive them and bless those that are living. I also forgive myself for all my faults and failures in the name of Jesus and Lord I thank you for this forgiveness.

Thank You, Father, for freedom from the load of unforgiveness, bitterness and resentment. In Jesus name Amen.

As a born again Christian we have received abundant forgiveness from the Lord of our sins. Anyone that does not know the Lord can know Him because of the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalm 32:1-2 says: Blesses is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

We are blessed and have abundant joy in our hearts because of the forgiveness that comes freely from the Lord. We have been forgiven for our willful disobedience and rebellion. We all have missed the mark and the Lord knows that we are imperfect. If we were still in our sin as a Christian there would be no way that we could see the Lord in heaven. Because of the forgiveness that the Lord shows toward us we have been reconciled back to God. The Lord forgives all sin no matter how big or small we think they are.

In Psalm 32:5 the Psalmists says that he acknowledged his sin before the Lord.

Psalm 32:5: I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquities have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

Sometimes the Holy Spirit has to work with us and show us our need to confess our sin to the Lord or to forgive someone or even to forgive ourselves. We must not try and hide our sins from the Lord or harbor unforgiveness the Lord sees all and is waiting for us to come to Him and acknowledge this fact. When we do the right thing before the Lord then He can begin to restore our personal lives, and for those that are near and dear to us. This type of work of the Holy Spirit is constant in our lives and not just at the time of conversion. We must always walk in a spirit of forgiveness towards ourselves and others.

We can be deceived by our own sins for a long time. That is why we need the Power of the Holy Spirit to open our eyes as Christians. Unbelievers cannot see their need for Jesus until they are drawn by the Holy Spirit to acknowledge their need.

Acts 26:18: To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Our eyes must be open to see what we need to hear and our ears opened to hear what we need to hear by the Power of the Holy Spirit.

To become spiritually strong as a Christian you must read the Bible the Word of God. When becoming a Christian, the Bible calls us “babes in Christ”. The only way to grow and learn the things of God is through the inspired Word of God. Reading other people’s Christian books will not be enough. A new Christian must read the Bible as their only trusted source of spiritual food. Moreover, the Bible will show us the mind of God and the ways of God. Another plus of reading the Word of God is the renewing of the Mind. As a new Christian we are used to thinking “the same ole” way that we always have. The Bible will cause our mind to become slowly renewed to the ways of the Lord.

The Word of God is important to our spiritual life, hence the comparison to water. We see in the Word of God also the comparison to milk which means a young baby Christian needs the milk of the Word to grow spiritually. Additionally, the Word of God is compared to meat, which shows that there is spiritual substance for the mature Christian.

In Psalms 119:160, the psalmist proclaims that the Word of God is the truth saying: The sum of Thy word is truth, And every one of Thy righteous ordinances is everlasting. (Ps 119:160). We should not “depend” on a pastor, teacher or evangelist to keep us in the truth. The Word of God has been given to us individually so that we could remain in the way of the truth. We must get into the Word of God for ourselves so that we are not lost. God will hold everyone of us accountable as Christians to what we did and how we lived by the Word of God. We will not have to stand judgment for anyone else.

“Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things…” 2 Timothy 4:2-5

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Word of God is Eternal

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8

“…having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever….” 1 Peter 1:23

“For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” Matthew 5:18

“And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tittle of the law to fail.” Luke 16:17
